What is Winter Guard?

Color Guard have traditionally been a group of uniformed military people who carry the flag of their country, and whose primary purpose is to perform ceremonial routines.

Although the ceremonial, military, and marching heritage remain, theuses of color guard has gone far beyond the prescribed limits of those original color guards.

Today, much of the marching has been replaced with body movement, dance, costumes, and brightly colored sets and props.

Winter Guard is the result of exactly this development. In order to understand what Winter Guard is, you must forget everything you know about Marching Bands, Parades and Football Games. Winter Guard is an indoor dance competition focusing on only the color guard. Today, competitive Winter Guard includes 25,000 young people in more than 1000 units across the UnitedStates, Canada and Europe.

We are very excited with the number of Colina students who enrolled in the 1998/99 Color Guard Winter Guard and Parade Program. In order for this unit to be successfull, educationally sound, and enjoyable for all involved, there must be a solid commitment from all members selected. Being a member of this award winning team will involve time and a commitment (students & parents) to the program.

In this enrollment packet you will find practice & competition dates. You must agree to allow your daughter to attend alll of these dates if she wishes to participate in this program. Though you did sign a similar agreement during the tryout process, it is necessary to also complete this form. Your signature below indicates a commitment to meet all of the financial and time commitments for the 1998/99 Winter Guard/Parade Season.

I agree to support my daughter as a member of the 1998/99 Colina Color Guard Program. I understand that this will require both a financial and time commitment for a successsful, educational and enjoyable experience.

Commitment to Colina Middle School Color Guard Program

Winter Guard & Parade Season
Attendance at all performances is required and students will only be excused for severe illness or a death in the family. If this occurs please contact the Instructors immediately.

Attendance at all practices is required.
Any student having to miss a practice may be subject to removal from a performance at the discretion of the Instructors. Multiple unexcused absences may result in removal from the program.

What if my daughter needs to miss practice?
The Winter Guard Team is a small group of performers. If one person misses a practice the rest of the team suffers. In the event of an unscheduled emergency (such as medical attention or a death in the family) contact the Instructors immediately.

Rehearsal/Practice Conduct
In order to run rehearsals smoothly and to maintain a quality program, it is essential that each member show up to rehearsals on time and dressed for practice. Appropriate attire includes dark bottoms (shorts, sweat pants or leggings) and a white or light colored shirt. Dance Shoes or tennis shoes should be worn (high tips are not recommended due to the restriction of foot movement). Clothing should be comfortable and allow maximum flexibility of movement.
Jeans, skirts and dress shoes are not to be worn.

Equipment Care
Each member will be assignedan equipment number. Each piece of equipment will be issued to a student and will bear their number. Once issued, equipment becomes the responsibility of the individual.
Any equipment that is lost or excessibely damaged due to neglect or misuse must be replaced by the student.

Blatant neglect or intentional misuse or mistreatment of any equipment will result in disciplinary action.
Normal wear and tear is expected.

In addition to winter holiday novelty items, this year we have added many more of the See’s standards including pound boxes of chocolates, the fancy gold boxes, Bridge Mix, and much, much more. We even have See’s Gift Certificates, which carry no expiration dates.

So avoid the holiday crowds while supporting the efforts of the Colina Color Guard program.
